Put a Face with a Name: Design Within Reach

Design Within Reach has grown tremendously over the last few years, and I believe that part of that success is due to their marketing design. They put the photo of the designer of each product next to the item, and this resonates with buyers. They feel like they are getting something unique and artistic that they cannot find at a big box retailer.

Capital Returns on Advertising
"The gap between the best commercial and the worst commercial every year is not 20 or 50%. Its is 40 times, or 4,000%. Imagine if the was the difference between the performance of two investment funds. And it is creativity that is the multiplier." Andrew Robertson, BBDO Worldwide

Google's Business Phliosophy:
Business Phliosophy:
1) Ideas come from everywhere
Google expects everyone to innovate, even the finance team
2) Share everything you can
Every idea, every project, every deadline -- it's all accessible to everyone on the intranet
3) You're brilliant, we're hiring
Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin approve hires. They favor intelligence over experience
4) A license to pursue dreams
Employees get a "free" day a week. Half of new launches come from this "20% time"
5) Innovation, not instant perfection
Google launches early and often in small beta tests, before releasing new features widely
6) Don't politic, use data
Mayer discourages the use of "I like" in meetings, pushing staffers to use metrics
7) Creativity loves restraint
Give people a vision, rules about how to get there, and deadlines
8) Worry about usage and users, not money
Provide something simple to use and easy to love. The money will follow.
9) Don't kill projects -- morph them
There's always a kernel of something good that can be salvaged

Design is the Differential
"Design is the only differential that matters when industries are competing at equal price and functionality, because technology means no product can sustain an edge for long."
Intellectual Property & Design
"We don't believe we sell time," said Crispin Porter + Bogusky Partner Jeff Hicks. "We're in the intellectual property business. Most of the hourly setups are tied to a clear set of deliverables. We do brand thinking across a range of different media."

Don't be a Graphic Designer
Be a graphic broadway producer. Be a graphic lawyer. The role of the graphic designer is to not simply execute the visual vision of the client. The graphic designer's role is to solve business problems with visual solutions. And, to do that, the mindset of the graphic designer must change from artist to artist / [insert title of professional for project at hand].

Nolita - Soho Advertisement
In any other neighborhood besides Soho, this would look destitute, but because it's Soho, it's artistic, and it succeeded. It caught people's attention. The end-game: show the grass on the other side. If you're poor, be rich. If you're rich, appear poor.

Foreign Affairs Ad Concepts

I recently saw photos taken in areas around the world with active disputes, and thought of this ad campaign. I think this campaign is needed for FA for two reasons:
1) It's people centric. In contrast to current FA promotions, this shows people, and 'people' are at the root of why we read and care about international relations. Ads that just show text and images without people do NOT relate as well to readers.
2) Competitors are using ad campaigns with people in them, and they are benefiting from using this imagery. In particular, the Economist is full of images.
Where this campaign can run:
1) In other magazines
2) In banner ads on other websites
3) In inserts put into other magazines
4) In mailings to non-subscribers (i.e. direct mail)

Environmetally Friendly Envelope

Great idea: show your consumers you care about saving money and the environment. I would recommend this for Foreign Affairs (after all, isn't IR really about managing oil?), Budget Travel (how can you promote rainforest travel AND not saving trees?), and just about every publication....except for "Oil Weekly."
